All about the Kharnak Rupshu Trek

Beginning the journey from Manali-Kullu we will have reached in the region of Lahoul, continuing through the rock environment over the second highest motor able pass (Baralacha La 4800 m / 15,748 ft.). The trek commences at Tak via the Morang La (5300 m /17,388 ft.) highest point of altitude of the trek. After the pass we will pass through nomads’ hamlets, gorges and big plateaus before joining the Markha Valley then on to Hemis visiting famous monasteries of Ladakh. Flight from Leh to Delhi. Due to the difficulty of this trek, it requires a good physical condition.

Kharnak Rupshu Trek


Day 1

Arrival in Delhi
Guests will be received at the airport followed by a transfer to a hotel, where you will be staying overnight. 


Day 2

Overnight bus journey Delhi – Manali 
Travelling Distance: 570 km 
Travelling Time: 16 hours
Altitude: 2000 m / 6,561 ft.
Following a full day’s sightseeing in the vibrant Delhi City, we will then transfer you to the bus station. Overnight bus journey, fully air conditioned and comfortable to make the journey more relaxing.


Day 3

Arrival in Manali
Upon arrival in Manali, we will check you into your hotel to freshen up before exploring the local area. Old Manali, the Hadimba and Shiva Temple, as well as the monastery within the town, are all main attractions for sightseers. In the afternoon you will then be able to roam freely within the town, with an overnight stay in the hotel.


Day 4

Journey from Manali to Jispa – Darcha
Travelling Distance: 135 km
Altitude: 3300 m / 10,826 ft.
Our journey begins with a drive along the Beas River, upstream along the left bank through several villages, before reaching the Rohtang Pass (4050 m / 13,287 ft.).  Descending down into Gramphu, we will then have reached at the passport check point at Koskar. After Koskar we will then have reached in the tribal district headquarters of Keylong, where 35 km ahead is our campsite in Jispa.


Day 5

Journey from Darcha to Jispa to Whiskey Bridge
Travelling Distance: 115 km
Travelling Time: 5 hours
Altitude: 4300 m / 14,107 ft.
The trail passes over the Baralacha La (4800 m /15,748 ft.) before descending down to the plane of Sarchu, where your passport will be required at the check point. After 30 km we will have reached at the campsite.


Day 6

Trek 1 – Whiskey Bridge – Tak
Trekking Time: 3 hours
Altitude: 4400 m / 14,435 ft.
We will begin with a short walk along the road until the trail will descend to the riverbed. The day will be spent short to give you the opportunity to acclimatise yourself. Overnight stay in camp.


Day 7

Trek 2 – Tak – Base of Morang La
Trekking Time: 31/2 hours
Altitude: 4600 m / 15,091 ft.
After our short trek we will enter by the narrow gorge towards the Morang La. One can see the Bharel (mountain sheep) and the Ibex. We will make camp at the foot of the Morang La.


Day 8

Trek 3 – Base Tahtau 
Trekking Time: 5 hours
Altitude: 4600 m / 15,091 ft. (Over Morang La 5300 m /17,388 ft.)
Two and half hours will be spent climbing to the Morang La, where you can enjoy the extensive view of the magnificent Himalaya Range. We will then begin to descend to the campsite situated beside a stream.


Day 9

Trek 4 – Tahatau – Yakbu
Trekking Time: 6 hours
Altitude: 4500 m / 14,763 ft.
When crossing the Morang La, it is very often that you can’t see the wildlife until the last day of the trek. Easy stream crossing will be made 3 times until we have reached in Yakbu. Near the campsite, there is a small Gompa which has been built in a cave. The beautiful campsite will be made beside a stream.


Day 10

Trek 5 – Yakbu – Lungmotse
Trekking Time: 6 hours
Altitude: 4550 m / 14,927 ft.
Wading through a stream will need to be made before reaching into Sangtha Village of nomads. There we will meet the nomad people. This village is where the nomads live seasonally. We will make camp at the foot of the Yarla.


Day 11

Trek 6 – Lungmotse – Datt
Trekking Time: 8 hours
Altitude: 4200 m / 13,779 ft. (Over Yar La 4950 m / 16,240 ft.)
Today will be the longest day of treks. As we cross Yar La, one can see the Kyang (wild donkeys. In Datt you will visit the old monastery and the village itself, before spending the night on a beautiful campsite.


Day 12

Trek 7 – Datt – Sora
Trekking Time: 5 hours
Altitude: 4600 m / 15,091 ft.
As we walk through the beautiful gorge, crossing the crystal clear water streams, on the right side of the trail, one can see the ruins of an old castle. We will camp at the base of the Zalungkarpo La.


Day 13

Trek 8 – Sora – Langthang Chhu
Trekking Time: 51/2 hours
Altitude: 4500 m / 14,763 ft. (Over Zalung Karpo La 5197 m / 17,050 ft.)
The day will begin with a steady climb to the Zalung Karpo La, with amazing views of the mountain ranges. We will then descend through the rocky and dusty path until reaching the campsite.


Day 14

Trek 9 – Langthang Chhu – Nimaling
Trekking Time: 7 hours
Altitude: 4700 m / 15, 419 ft.
Trail leads along a stream accompanied by a few houses, owning barley fields. Eventually the path will join to the Markha track. The trek will then lead uphill towards Nimaling; dominated by Kang Yatse Peak (6400 m / 20, 997 ft.). Overnight camp.


Day 15

Trek 10 – Nimaling to Shang
Trekking Time: 8 hours
Altitude: 3640 m / 11,942 ft. (Over Kongmaru La 5150 m / 16,896 ft.)
A zigzag ascent for around 2 hours will lead us to the panoramic Kongmaru La. We will then follow a steep descent until Chuskirmo and a beautiful riverbed. A vibrant rocky path will lead us to Shang; a pleasant campsite. We will also visit a small Gompa outside of the village. Overnight camp in Shang.


Day 16

Journey from Shang to Leh
Travelling Distance: 60 km
Altitude: 3400 m / 11,154 ft.
We will be picked up by an arranged vehicle that will take us to visit the monasteries of Hemis and Thiskey, as well as the Shey Palace. We will continue our journey on to Leh where you will be transferred to your hotel, where you will spend the night.


Day 17

Sightseeing around Leh
We will be visiting the Stok Palace and museum followed by a visit to the Spituk Monastery and a stroll in the village. In the afternoon you will be able to spend the rest of your time at your leisure, with an overnight stay in a hotel.


Day 18

Sightseeing around Leh
We will be visiting the Royal Palace and the Shanti Stupa, as well as the monastery with the tow. In the afternoon you will be able to spend the rest of your time at your leisure within the town, with an overnight stay in a hotel.


Day 19

Flight from Leh – Delhi
You will be transferred to the domestic airport for your flight to Delhi. Once reached in Delhi you will then be transported to your hotel where you will be staying overnight. The afternoon can be spent at your own leisure.


Day 20

Old and New Delhi
Full day of sightseeing in Old and New Delhi. Overnight stay in hotel.


Day 21

Flight Departure
You will be transferred to the Indira Gandhi International Airport where you will depart to your onward destination.
